It's almost been three years since I started having a great time with Karl-sensei. Every weekly lesson is so fun that the hour flies by. Highlights: he uses his own original, level-based printouts (he's British-qualified); lessons focus on speaking, and since no Japanese is allowed, I have to express myself somehow with the English I have — which meant I could communicate with people from all over the world without difficulty during a recent overseas work program in Denmark. Vocabulary and grammar aren't taught the dry, rule-heavy way Japanese schools do it — somehow it's fun through rhythm and repetition. We also watch and play sports and board games popular in the West, like cricket and backgammon, together on the computer. He's always happy to give casual advice on studying abroad too. Karl-sensei always puts students first — come feel like you're studying overseas every week and make your life richer through English!

私はからLanguageCafeに通っています。 カール先生はとても優しくて面白い先生です。当然厳しい時もありますが、いつも私が拙い英語で話すことをしっかりと聞いて、興味を持ってくださいます。なので、最近あった出来事を先生に話す事も１つの楽しみです。 レッスンではプリントを使って文法の確認やリスニングなどを行います。宿題も出ますが、忙しさで調整してくださいます。カール先生と話していると先生のお話や他の国のことも知る事が出来て楽しいです。レッスンの最後に先生とやるボードゲームも楽しいです。 以前は海外の方に話しかけられると固まって何も話せなくなっていた私ですが、LanguageCafeに通い始めてから週に1時間はカール先生と英語を使って話すので、駅などで話しかけられても変に構えず笑顔で答えられるようになりました。おかげで留学生の子たちとも仲良くなり、海外に友達が出来ました。

I've been going to Language Cafe. Karl-sensei is very kind and funny. He can be strict of course, but he always listens carefully and shows real interest even when my English is clumsy, so telling him about recent things in my life is one of my pleasures. Lessons use printouts for grammar review and listening; there's homework, but he adjusts it around how busy I am. Talking with him I get to hear his stories and learn about other countries, and the board game at the end of the lesson is fun too. I used to freeze up if a foreigner spoke to me, but since I started speaking English with Karl-sensei an hour a week, I can now answer with a smile even if someone talks to me at the station. Thanks to that I've become friends with exchange students and made friends overseas.

母の友人に勧めていただきカール先生のところに通い始めました。 元々、大学で英語を専攻しているのですが、大学では習わないような言い回しや単語などネイティブの先生からマンツーマンで学ぶことができ毎回の授業で新しいことがたくさん吸収できます。また授業もとても楽しく毎回1時間があっという間に過ぎてしまいます。 時々開かれる集まりでは、素敵な出会いもたくさんあります！これからも通い続けて先生やLanguage Cafeに通っている方達から刺激を受けたくさんのことを吸収していきたいです。

I started going to Karl-sensei's on a friend of my mother's recommendation. I major in English at university, but here I get one-on-one lessons with a native speaker covering phrases and words we never learn at university, and I pick up a lot of new things every lesson. The lessons are also really fun and the hour flies by every time. The occasional get-togethers lead to some wonderful encounters too! I want to keep going and keep absorbing inspiration from Karl-sensei and the other Language Cafe students.

Karl先生の教室に通い始めて5年目になります。 始めの２年間は広島のカール先生の教室でレッスンを受けていましたが、仕事で東京に移り、今はオンラインで毎週を行なっています。 この5年間、英語について、本当にたくさんのことを学ばせていただきました。 私は、学業と仕事で、英語を使う必要があったため、Karl先生の教室に通い始めました。 出会った当時Karl先生は、ハイレベルな英語を身につけて欲しいとよくおっしゃっていました。 その言葉にあるように、レッスンは楽しいだけでなく、時に厳しいこともあります。 それぞれの生徒さんによって異なっているかもしれませんが、宿題も比較的しっかり出るので、大変に感じることもあります。 でも、そんなことを繰り返しているうちに、自分の英語力に変化を感じられるようになってきました。5年前の私は、自分が言いたいことの2〜3割程度しかKarl先生に伝えることができませんでした。また、海外に行っても、英語で話すことや話しかけられることが苦痛で、怖いとすら感じていました。 自分の理想のレベルになるためには、もう少し時間がかかりそうですが、英語でコミュニケーションをとることが楽しいです。 そして、仕事で海外に行っても、自分の考えを伝えることができるようになりました。 Karl先生は、いろいろな国で生活をされたご経験があり、友達も各国に多くいます。 私が仕事でイタリアに行った時は、Karl先生のお友達がとても素敵なBBを紹介してくれました。 また、家族でタイに旅行をした時も、ホテルや現地のことをいろいろと教えてくれました。 また、今はレッスンだけでなく、私の仕事のパートナーとして、英文校閲もしてくださっています。 本物の英語を身につけるためには、時間と努力とお金が必要ですが、きっとそれだけの価値と魅力がKarl先生の教室にはあると思います

This is my fifth year with Karl-sensei's classroom. I studied at his Hiroshima classroom for the first two years, then moved to Tokyo for work and have been taking weekly lessons online since. I've learned a huge amount about English over these five years. I started because I needed English for study and work. When we first met, Karl-sensei often said he wanted me to reach a high level of English — and true to that, lessons aren't only fun, they're sometimes strict too. Homework is fairly substantial, which can feel like a lot at times, but repeating that process, I've started to notice real change in my ability. Five years ago I could only get across maybe 20-30% of what I wanted to say; even abroad, speaking English or being spoken to felt painful, even frightening. Reaching my ideal level will still take time, but communicating in English is genuinely enjoyable now, and I can express my own thinking when I travel abroad for work. Karl-sensei has lived in many countries and has friends all over the world — when I went to Italy for work, a friend of his introduced me to a wonderful B&B, and when my family traveled to Thailand he gave us all kinds of advice about hotels and the local area. These days he's not just my teacher but also proofreads my English for work. Real English takes time, effort and money to acquire, but I believe Karl-sensei's classroom is worth every bit of that.

At New Year's 2015 I went to a party in London with a close friend, a make-up artist, and had dinner at the newly-opened London EDITION — eight of us, only three Japanese. The other two Japanese guests had lived and studied abroad since they were young and were fluent, while I was stringing words together and racking my brain for whatever English I had, completely blank on the grammar. I've worked in hospitality for 20 years, so I felt I really had to be able to speak English, and out of sheer determination I researched everything I could online and studied alone for a year, then decided I needed regular practice with a native speaker and started looking for one-on-one lessons. Private lessons are expensive though, and I wasn't sure I could keep it up, and a place too far away would be hard too — so searching online, Language Cafe was the best match for cost and location. I signed up for a trial. The price was unbelievably reasonable, and after two and a half years now of the teacher's beautiful British English and the lesson content, I genuinely feel it's been worth it. Without Karl-sensei I wouldn't have gotten this far this fast. I look forward to every lesson — if you want to speak English, you should join here. Trust your future self, three years from now! The real thing is at Language Cafe. It's already been five and a half years at Language Cafe, and about a year ago I got interested in French too, on the idea that starting French would further improve my English — and I'm a self-confessed wine lover. I've been to France for both work and pleasure, so I made the big decision to tell Karl-sensei I wanted to start French. I know from learning English that doing it half-heartedly means you never actually speak the language and it's a waste of time and money, so honestly for the first three months I wavered between continuing and giving up — but now I can hold a basic everyday conversation. In under a year! I'll keep learning both languages for life. It still surprises me, but Karl-sensei's original French materials are wonderful, and mixing English into French study makes the time fly — every time I go to Language Cafe my French vocabulary grows and I feel like I'm already in Paris! Honestly, unlike English, I never studied French vocabulary in school, so it's almost all memorizing from scratch and can feel tough at times, but having decided to speak French, I'll enjoy it as a lifelong friend. Karl-sensei is also a graduate of the Sorbonne in France, so he generously shares all kinds of French information, culture, history and even France's wonderful café culture during lessons. So learning is a joy for someone as curious about France as me! I think knowing English already helped me pick up French faster. Karl-sensei always explains English simply, like a puzzle, and teaches enthusiastically. And with my 4-lessons-a-month course, I can switch two of them to French time — an incredibly flexible arrangement, with the fee staying the same, which I don't think any other school offers. Karl-sensei's French is apparently so native-sounding that French people mistake him for French! If you're interested in French, there's no school to go to but Language Cafe. I'm amazed at myself, speaking not just English but French now too. I'll keep enjoying French lessons with Karl-sensei on my way to being a proper trilingual — and English lessons too, of course! Let's all aim to be trilingual! J'adore français. La vie est Belle !

私は以前にも英会話教室へ通った事がありましたが長続きしませんでした。 しかし、海外旅行やイギリスの文化や音楽が好きで、もう一度英会話を習いたいと思うようになりカール先生のレッスンを受けるようになってもうすぐ3年になります。 カール先生は、私がヨーロッパへ旅行に行く前に鉄道のチケットを予約するお手伝いをしてくれたりと、レッスン以外の事でも親身になって助けてくれるような人柄です。 レッスンでは先生オリジナルのプリントを毎回使用し、文法やボキャブラリー、リスニングなど偏らず様々な事が学べます。1度教えたら終わりという事はなく、振り返って何度も何度も教えてくれるのです。 宿題もあり、スピーキングの課題も出ます。スピーキングが苦手な私にとっては試練ですが、この反復練習のお陰でリスニング力も上達してきていると実感します。 教え方もとても上手で、楽しくレッスンに通っています。

I'd taken English lessons before, but I never stuck with them. But because I love overseas travel and British culture and music, I wanted to try again, and it's been almost three years since I started lessons with Karl-sensei. He's the kind of person who helps out even beyond lessons — he once helped me book train tickets before a trip to Europe. Every lesson uses his own original printouts, covering grammar, vocabulary and listening in a balanced way. He never just teaches something once and moves on — he circles back and re-teaches it again and again. There's homework, including speaking assignments, which is a real challenge for me since I'm weak at speaking, but thanks to that repetition I can genuinely feel my listening improving too. He's a very skilled teacher, and I enjoy going to every lesson.

Language Cafe に通い始めて約２年が経ちますが、ここに通いはじめて、ほんとによかったと毎回感じています。先生自身がテキストを作られているのですが、これがすごい量と内容！ 英語力が鍛えられるだけはありません。基本的には日常的に使う英会話の内容なんですが、世界各地の地理や文化を交えたものがあったり、はじめて聞く不思議な物語があったり。毎回どんなプリントをくださるのか楽しみです。 先生の知識の豊富さには、感心しきりです。私は習い始めた当初、リスニングのレッスンが苦手だったのですが、最近は急に英語がすっと聞こえてきて驚く経験をたくさんしています。それとともに、文法力も確実にアップしていると感じています。先生の指導力は信頼できる！と感じたので、私の中学生の子供たちも通わせることにしました。子どもたちも楽しく学習できているようです。 先生は日本人が間違いやすいポイントをよく理解されているようで(子どもたちと私が同じ間違いをするのですが)、その間違いポイントを面白おかしく直してくれるので、子どもたちも、先生とお勉強をするのが楽しくてたまらないようです。これからも、みんなでずっと通い続けて、ますます英会話力をつけていきたいです。

It's been about two years since I started at Language Cafe, and every time, I feel genuinely glad I started. He makes his own materials himself — and the amount and quality is incredible! It's not just about building English ability — the everyday conversational content also weaves in geography and culture from around the world, and sometimes strange stories I've never heard before. I always look forward to what printout he'll give next. I'm constantly impressed by how knowledgeable he is. I was weak at listening when I started, but lately I've had many surprising moments where English suddenly just becomes clear to me, and I feel my grammar improving steadily too. I trusted his teaching enough that I now send my junior-high-age kids to him as well, and they seem to be learning happily too. He clearly understands the mistakes Japanese people commonly make (my kids and I make the same ones), and corrects them in a funny way, so the kids seem to genuinely enjoy studying with him. We all want to keep going and keep building our English ability.

After a transfer to the US was decided, a junior colleague introduced me to Karl-sensei and I took English lessons. The lessons were so fun I was laughing the whole time. Karl-sensei has a lot of experience as an English teacher and uses his own materials, pacing the lesson to each student's ability. To keep going long-term, the teacher's personality matters a lot — and on that front too, Karl-sensei is the best! Your English is bound to improve naturally while you're having fun. Meeting people matters so much — meeting Karl-sensei made me realize how much the people you meet can shape your life. If you're looking for a skilled, kind, and genuinely sincere teacher for English study, I highly recommend Karl-sensei! After living in Australia for many years, I returned home to Hiroshima in 2011. Interpreting and translation work was going well, but after that contract ended, I decided to enroll in an Australian university to study interpreting and translation further. For the application, I needed a personal statement and had to answer several questions from the university, always requiring precise, error-free English — so I was looking for a skilled teacher who could advise me on the writing. I was introduced to a few English teachers through acquaintances, but couldn't find one I trusted, and it took a while to find someone good. The day I found Karl-sensei online, I went straight to Language Café to ask for help. It was an unusual request outside a normal language class — advice and review of English application documents — but Karl-sensei smiled and happily said "No problem!" His sincerity came through immediately, and I instinctively felt "I've finally found a great teacher!" In lessons he reviewed everything from the content of my personal statement to spelling and grammar, and his own writing skill was excellent — the personal statement that came out of it was extremely polished. Later, when I got worn out and started to feel like giving up amid the complicated application process, he always encouraged me, and I finally made it to submitting my university application! Karl-sensei was as happy as I was. All that's left now is to do my best on the entrance exam — I'm aiming to pass for his sake too! I hope to keep this relationship going, as teacher and as friend, for a long time to come!

2007年から3年間アメリカに駐在した後、広島に帰国したのですが、英語を話す機会が少なくなりました。どこか英語を話す機会がないかなと思っていた矢先に、フェイスブックでLanguage Cafeを見つけたのが、カール先生のレッスンに通うきっかけでした。 印象深かったレッスンは、"容赦のない"反復練習です。「話す能力を伸ばしたい」という希望を伝えたところ、スピーキングの暗唱練習をひたすら繰り返しました。「冠詞や前置詞が一つでも間違えたらやり直し」という、容赦ない厳しさ？でしたが、やり遂げた時の充実感がとても心地よかったのを覚えています。カール先生オリジナルのテキストを毎回２ページずつ宿題として持ち帰っていましたが、ボキャブラリーが増えていくのも実感しました。 また、格調高いイギリス英語を聞くことができるのも、カール先生のレッスンならではだと思います。レッスンの合間に話す話題も、サッカーやテニスなどスポーツに関するものや、ヨーロッパや東南アジアなど旅に関するもの、さらにカール先生が飼っているかわいいワンちゃん「Qba（キューバ）」やいろんな「なぞなぞ」など、Language Cafeでのレッスンは幅広い分野にわたっていて飽きさせません。 今年4月に福岡に転居したため、今はカール先生のレッスンに行けなくなってしまいました。、引っ越し前にわざわざ送別パーティーを開いてくれた人情たっぷりのカール先生。また今度お会いするまでに、スペイン語も頑張って、ぜひスペイン語のレッスンも受けたいと思っています。頑張ります！

After three years working in the US from 2007, I returned to Hiroshima, but had fewer chances to speak English. Just as I was wondering where to find opportunities to speak, I found Language Cafe on Facebook, which led me to Karl-sensei's lessons. The most memorable part of the lessons was the "merciless" repetition practice. When I said I wanted to improve my speaking, he had me repeat spoken recitation drills over and over — "get even one article or preposition wrong and start again" — mercilessly strict, but I remember how satisfying it felt once I finally got it right. I'd take home two pages of Karl-sensei's original text as homework each time, and I could really feel my vocabulary growing. Getting to hear elegant, proper British English is also something unique to Karl-sensei's lessons. Topics between drills range from football and tennis to travel in Europe and Southeast Asia, plus his adorable dog "Qba" and various riddles — Language Cafe lessons cover such a wide range that they never get boring. I moved to Fukuoka this April so I can no longer attend his lessons — but true to his warmth, Karl-sensei even threw me a farewell party before I left. I'm working hard on Spanish until we meet again, hoping to take Spanish lessons with him too. I'll do my best!

"I'd wanted to study French for a very long time, but with work always busy I thought regular lessons would be difficult. By chance, through a mutual acquaintance, I got to know Karl, and that connection led me to start French. I had almost no French, so my conversation with Karl is in English. It was hard going at first, but now I look forward to every lesson. Scheduling is easy, and Karl's teaching is very thorough and interesting. His pronunciation especially is wonderful, and it always makes me want to improve further. I also have a goal of entering a restaurant-service competition this summer, and he's giving me special lessons toward that too, helping enthusiastically. I'm planning my first trip to France in autumn, so I want to study even harder here and enjoy France when I get there. I had zero Spanish knowledge before coming to Language Cafe, but thanks to lessons matched to my level and a teacher who's strict when needed, I was able to hold conversations with almost no trouble on a trip to Spain. Having no Japanese in the lessons is, I think, ideal for building a dedicated "Spanish space" in your head. I've been coming since I was 19 — it's been a long relationship! They're accepting new students, by the way — Spanish, French, and English too!

Story of a long-lasting, special friendship 'Friendship is love without his wings'. And I can truly tell you all that there is nothing in this world and in human life more precious, worthy to be loved, safer than a true friend. When I was 17 I spent a full month in England, at the Beechwood Sacred Heart College, where I met a great man, the dearest Mr Sullivan. Well, to be honest with you, he was my English Professor, a very nice person, always respectful, patient, passionate about his job and eager to teach us at his best, funny and pleasant at the same time. But as always happens, and as life is as volatile and fragile, when something gets to its end and you, regrettably, have to say 'goodbye', then new people, new experiences, new places, new friends are already ready to welcome you in their lifes… and those ones you previously met are quickly put back into that drawer called 'past', which becomes richer and richer as years flow away. 'C'est la vie', they use to say: nothing less, nothing more. Yet I truly believe that 'la vie' is also, if not mainly, what you build with your own hands, with passion, dedication, sacrifice, strength of willingness: and human relationships do likewise. That man was not only my Professor but, despite the distance, despite the different experiences and personal stories through the years, he has become one of my most reliable friends. Karl and I never 'stopped being friends' – technology definitely has helped us a lot! – any occasion, any time is a good one to get in touch, drop a line, ask to the other 'How's life there with you?', be supportive with a 'Stay well, stay happy', or even a simple but warm 'Ciao mate…' together with a smile. If someone would ask me how and why we became such friends, believe me, I wouldn't be really able to answer. They say that life is made of invisible, finest threads which link our little lives together: no matter where in the globe you are, no matter who you are. And maybe that's what happened to us: the strange game of destiny, which rolls the dice in the way you would never expect, but what it gives to you will last for the eternity, something which can never be stolen, something which is unassailable even by Time, humans' greatest enemy. And when my mind and my memory run back to that time, to my 17s, to that experience away from home, to those hours spent learning English grammar and rules and pronunciation, and, above all, to this long-lasting friendship, my heart and my soul start smiling and it looks as if Time has never passed by. It was a month only, few hours together, a picture of us, and a French poem for me, in the diary of my 17s: but so many memories which I am sure neither me nor you, my dear friend, will never forget. Thank you for having spent some of your time in reading these lines: I truly hope that you, like me, will keep on building strong human relationships which could last for a lifetime, as there is nothing as special as a true friend, and nothing as rare and precious as a pure feeling of affection.

4年前からカール先生のマンツーマンレッスンを受け始めましたが途中結婚して 引越しもあり、2年近いブランクがあります。 ですが、どうしてももう一度カール先生のレッスンを受けたいと常々思っていた為 去年の10月より再びレッスンを再開しました。 今まで沢山のスクールに通いましたがどれも納得いかず、先生方の英語も学術的に高い とも思えませんでした。 カール先生の授業は全て英語ですが、本人のレベルに合わせてテキストで(先生の作られたもの) 始められるので、わかりやすく、知らないうちに少しずつ英語がレベルアップしていく感じ。 リスニング、スピーキング、ライティングがバランスよく組合わされています。 ひとつひとつの英語を本当に理解しているか否か細かくチェックが入るので、わからないまま 前に進むという事は、ありません。 授業には妥協がなく、それでいて優しさとユーモアに溢れた先生の人柄につられて、いつも間にか楽しく1時間が過ぎていくという感じです。 特に気に入ってるところは、イギリス英語を話され言葉が美しいという点、他にもスペイン語、 フランス語を流暢に話されるので、フランスにいく前は、短期でフランス語のレッスンを受けさ せて頂くこともあります。 今までで、一番すばらしい教師と言える方です。 私は一生続けていくつもりです。 カール先生を御紹介して下さった友人には心から感謝しています。

I started one-on-one lessons with Karl-sensei four years ago, but had a nearly two-year gap due to marriage and moving. I kept feeling I really wanted to come back to his lessons, so I resumed in October last year. I've attended plenty of schools before and never felt satisfied — the teachers' English never felt academically strong either. Karl-sensei's classes are entirely in English, but you start with materials (his own) matched to your level, so it's easy to follow and you feel yourself improving little by little without noticing. Listening, speaking and writing are all balanced together, and he carefully checks whether you truly understand each piece of English, so you're never left moving forward without understanding. There's no compromise in the lessons, yet his warmth and humor mean the hour passes enjoyably before you know it. What I especially like is how beautiful his British English sounds — he's also fluent in Spanish and French, so before a trip to France I sometimes take short-term French lessons too. He's the best teacher I've ever had, and I intend to keep going for life. I'm deeply grateful to the friend who introduced me to Karl-sensei.

Believing language learning is mostly about your own effort, I studied English my own way for many years. But I always ran into the same question in the end — "why can't I speak better?" — and was thinking about giving up. But now studying English at Language Cafe is genuinely enjoyable, and I want to keep working to improve further. I think Language Cafe's teaching method is excellent — very systematically organized, and genuinely useful for language learning. Karl-sensei is very approachable, and the small talk before each lesson is one of my pleasures too. The school feels like home. "Intelligent English" — that's my goal.

Karl is a very bright, fun teacher. Talking with him feels just like spending time with a friend, so the hour-long lesson flies by. He also always carefully explains, one by one, any words I don't understand. He teaches slang you won't find in any textbook, which makes it really interesting. After the lesson too, he chats with me about all kinds of things including football, which I really enjoy. Looking forward to more lessons.

I came to Japan from Mongolia 4 years ago. This year I met an amazing person Mr.Karl. When I met him first, I thought he is very good teacher and special person. A friend invited me, and it's been 5-6 years since I started at Language Cafe. Even someone weak at English like me can take private lessons without worrying about other people around, and I've gradually gotten better at listening and communicating. Three years ago, hoping to one day be posted overseas for work, I started at Karl's classroom. The deciding factor was, above all, the affordable fee. Once I started, Karl's lessons turned out to be very dedicated — since it's one-on-one, he always focuses on my weak points. Karl doesn't speak Japanese, so even questions have to be in English — but being forced into that English-only environment was very effective at breaking down my hesitation to speak. He's also experienced and knowledgeable about all kinds of things, so the chat outside the lesson itself is very enjoyable too. It's been two years since my child started learning English. Unlike group lessons at other English schools, it's one-on-one, so both my child and I were nervous at first, but he teaches at my child's own pace and is kind, so now we look forward to every lesson. Sixty minutes of intensive conversation with the teacher gave me really solid practice. His original materials are also well put together, with a lot of variety — brushing up listening and grammar, building vocabulary topic by topic — so every lesson felt fresh and never boring. He also carefully clears up the grammar questions Japanese people commonly get wrong, so it was very easy to understand. I'm currently on a break because of work, but I plan to continue once I have more time.

Every lesson is fun! Maybe it's Karl-sensei's personality, but you learn happily in a very relaxed atmosphere. I couldn't speak any English at all, but I kept feeling frustrated every time I traveled abroad, so I started lessons casually, thinking even a little listening ability would make travel more enjoyable. After about six months I could understand around 50% of foreign movies and TV dramas, and now I can somehow communicate with native speakers. He makes original materials for free, matched to each student's level and goals, which is a huge help. Lessons are entirely in English and grammar is taught thoroughly, and Karl-sensei is warm and has plenty to talk about, so even someone shy like me looks forward to every lesson.

Thanks to Karl-sensei's lessons, I scored 7 or above in every section of the IELTS! (Listening 7, Reading 8, Speaking 8, Overall 7.5) The most useful part of the lessons was repeatedly reading aloud the short sentences he prepared — that became both the key to cracking IELTS and the foundation of my English ability. The fee was also much cheaper than IELTS-prep courses at the big English conversation chains, and he answered questions outside of lessons too, so I think it was a great choice cost-for-value. IELTS is an unavoidable test for studying or moving to the UK, Australia, or Canada. I believe it's precisely because I built solid English ability at Language Cafe, affordably and without strain, that I was able to reach an overall score of 7.5.

I first met Karl about ten years ago. Back then he was young, handsome, very slim, and an excellent English teacher. He hasn't changed much even now, though maybe he's put on a little weight. I'm now 55, and I feel like it's gotten harder to improve my English these days, perhaps because of my age, but his English lessons are still a lot of fun. I want to keep studying English with him going forward.

In summer 2002 I was a student at Cicero Language School in Tunbridge Wells GB. Karl Sullivan was one of my teachers. I had a great time during my stay in England. Not only lessons were very interesting owing to a good mix of grammar, orthography, discussions and presentations. In addition to that, Karl showed to his students the city and taught us how to handle the language in a less formal and relaxed way. I will always remember the great time I spent in Tunbridge Wells and my acquired knowledge in terms of written and spoken language is still useful in my daily life!

We've been going to Karl-sensei's for over four years now, since we were 7 and 5. From our very first class, Mom would drop us off and leave right at the door — it's just us and Karl-sensei in the class. We felt uneasy at first, but got used to it quickly and it became fun. It's like going abroad for an hour every week, and we don't get nervous around foreign people anymore.

個人でも海外旅行が出来るようになりたいと、英会話を始めました。 最初はうまく英語で表現出来ませんでしたが、カール先生の熱心な指導のおかげで、今では冗談を交えるくらい楽しく英語でのコミュニケーションがとるようになりました。 また、先生は海外での生活経験も豊富で、旅行好きの私にとっては興味深い生の話しが聞けて、これも楽しみの一つになっています。

I started English lessons because I wanted to be able to travel abroad on my own. At first I couldn't express myself well in English, but thanks to Karl-sensei's enthusiastic teaching, I can now communicate in English happily enough to even trade jokes. He also has extensive experience living abroad, and as someone who loves to travel, hearing his firsthand stories has become one of my pleasures too.

I take private English lessons. The teacher is highly knowledgeable about English education, accurately assesses individual ability, and paces the lesson to match, so I can study efficiently and effectively and am very satisfied. Being British, he also exposes me to British English rather than American English, giving a slightly different kind of learning. Also, no Japanese is allowed at all, so I study with a real sense of focus. Casual talk outside the lesson itself, about world affairs or sports, is also very educational.

海外旅行に行ってまったく英語を話せない事で失敗などあり英会話に行きたいなと思ってましたがどこに行けばよいのかわからず何年かたち友達の紹介でLanguage Cafeに通うようになりました。 通って7年ぐらいたちます。 長い間通えるのも居心地がいいからだと思います。 カール先生は、その人の自主性を生かしてくれます。 私の場合、まったく英語を理解してない状態から入り努力しないので１週間に1回英語に触れるだけ。英語圏のドラマ・映画は、見てません。 まだまだ、初心者レベルですが会社で英語のテストを受けた時にリスニングが意外によくてビックリしました。 何か目標がある方が通うとすぐにレベルアップするのではと思います。 海外旅行に行って楽しめるようにこれからも私のペースで通っていきたいと思います。

After some embarrassing moments traveling abroad and not being able to speak any English at all, I wanted to start English lessons, but didn't know where to go, and years passed until a friend introduced me to Language Cafe. It's been about seven years now. I think being able to keep going this long is thanks to how comfortable the place feels. Karl-sensei lets each student take their own initiative. In my case, I started from basically no understanding of English and don't put in much effort, only getting exposed to English once a week — I don't even watch English-language dramas or movies. I'm still very much a beginner, but I was surprised at how well I did on the listening section of an English test at work. I think if you go in with a specific goal, you'd level up much faster. I'll keep going at my own pace so I can enjoy myself when I travel abroad.

英語が全く話せないまま海外旅行へ行き、少しでも話したいと思ったのが始めたきっかけです。 そして、知人に相談し出会ったのがカール先生です。 海外の人らしくとてもユーモアな方です。 授業になれば時には優しく、時には厳しく、ちゃんと宿題まで出てきます。 発音が分からない私に何度も何度も付き合ってくれます。 また、先生には愛犬がいて、その愛犬に会いに行くのも楽しみの１つです。 英語をマスターする道は長いですが、先生となら楽しく勉強できそうです。

I went on an overseas trip unable to speak any English at all, and wanting to be able to say at least a little led me to start. I consulted an acquaintance and that's how I met Karl-sensei. Very much like a foreigner in the best way, he's full of humor. Once class starts he's sometimes gentle, sometimes strict, and there's proper homework too. He patiently works through pronunciation with me again and again, no matter how many times it takes. He also has a beloved dog, and visiting the dog is one of my pleasures too. The road to mastering English is long, but with this teacher, it seems like I can enjoy the journey.

４年間通っています。カール先生はとにかく教え方が上手なので、英語に苦手意識があった私でもすぐに慣れることができました。わからないことは簡単な単語と動きや表情でわかりやすく説明してくれます。故郷イギリスの話や旅の体験談なども聞けて楽しいですよ。

I've been going for four years. Karl-sensei is simply an excellent teacher, so even someone like me who felt intimidated by English got used to it quickly. When something's unclear, he explains it clearly with simple words plus gestures and expressions. Getting to hear stories about his home country and his travels is fun too.

カール先生のレッスンは楽しく、たまに厳しく好きです。 個人レッスンなので自分のペースで進んでいけるので私に合います。 全く苦手だった英語が今では、海外旅行で少しは話せるようになりました。 あと、、、先生の愛犬キューバがとてもかわいいです。

Karl-sensei's lessons are fun and occasionally strict, which I like. Being private lessons, I can go at my own pace, which suits me. English, which I used to be terrible at, I can now speak a little of when I travel abroad. Also... his dog Qba is really cute.

私は人前で話すことが苦手で、ましてや英語で会話することなど考えもしませんでした。しかしなんとか英会話ができるようになりたいと思いランゲージカフェでプライベートレッスンを受けることにしました。今では海外旅行をするのが楽しみになっており、数カ国を旅行しました。現地の人達との会話やちょっとしたトラブルも解決できるようになりました。ほんの少し英会話ができるだけで、何か人生が変わってきたような気がします。

I've always been bad at public speaking, let alone speaking in English — it was never even on my radar. But wanting to somehow become able to hold a conversation in English, I decided to take private lessons at Language Cafe. Now I look forward to traveling abroad and have visited several countries. I've become able to hold conversations with locals and even handle small problems that come up. Just being able to speak a little English has felt like it's changed my life.

友達に勧められて呉から通うようになりました。授業は最近のニュース、各国の文化や慣用句など独自なのでとても満足しているし、確実に語彙が増えました。生徒さんが旅先から送ってきたポストカードが教室にたくさん貼ってあるので、それを眺めるのも楽しみのひとつです。

A friend recommended it, and I've been commuting from Kure. The lessons cover recent news, culture and idioms from various countries in a way that's genuinely his own, and I'm very satisfied — my vocabulary has definitely grown. The classroom walls are covered with postcards students have sent from their travels, and looking at those is one of my pleasures too.
